Jeremy Geerdes :: Effective Website Design & Development
Playground

The world of web development can be a frightening place. What can we do? What won't work? How can I make my website stand out?

Welcome to my playground. This is where I tinker with different technologies and show them off as things you can do on your website. Even better yet, if you find something you like here, feel free to implement it on your site! All I ask is that you mention that this feature was developed by me!

  • Jeremy's [Semi] Advanced Google Maps Local Search Control
The jGMLSC is a local search control for Google Maps that offers a few bells and whistles that other options don't, including a pull-out drawer for search results that can be closed without clearing the results from the page, the ability to fade to semi-transparent when not in use, and seamless crossing between G* and google.* namespaces.
  • Google Search Control
The Google AJAX Search API's Search Control is a quick and easy way to offer multimedia searching on your own site. On this page, I've made a couple of refinements, including the ability to automatically search for a URL-passed parameter and the bolding of individual tabs so that they stand out from the crowd.
  • Google Maps
You've seen Google Maps deployed on your competitors' sites. This is a simple map with a couple of twists.
  • Google Map Search Hacks
Google has developed a wizard to automatically generate code to deploy a Google local search with map on your own site. Unfortunately, it doesn't always offer the specific functionality you need. This is a page for experimenting with custom refinements to the Google Map Search.
  • Google Feeds Control Hacks
the Google AJAX Feeds API's Feeds Control and Dynamic Feeds Control offer the ability to include content from several popular syndication feeds directly on your site. They're both on this page, plus a couple of enhancements that I worked out myself.
  • Yahoo! Search
Without the pre-fab control options, Yahoo!'s search API's are a bit more difficult to utilize than Google's various API's, but it also offers a little more functionality. Here's my custom Yahoo! Search Control, complete with paging!
  • Jeremy's Very Cool Ticker
This is a multi-mode ticker to be used with news, weather, and event information, etc. Utilizing AJAX technologies, it loads headlines from either a plain text file or a valid RSS 2.0 feed.
